Some of the area’s few gardens to open to the public in September celebrated their biggest year yet last weekend.
Fourteen well-kept gardens in Risby opened up to the public to raise money for the village’s hall, church and school.
Attracting visitors from as far away as southern Essex, head organiser Canon Brian Lillistone credited the gardens’ unusual opening times to this year’s success.
He said: “Being open in September gives us a competitive edge.
“Our gardens are the perfect setting for autumnal walks in the sun.
“People were very complimentary. One of our gardens counted 100 visitors on Sunday – we’re chuffed that so many people have enjoyed them.”
