A council is taking action to evict a group of travellers who have moved onto land in Great Barton.

Eleven caravans pitched up on Diomed Drive green at about 5.30pm on Friday.

The land is owned by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, which served a letter to the travellers on Monday morning asking them to leave.

Yesterday, a council spokeswoman said section 77 notices were served on the unauthorised encampment giving them a deadline of 10am today (August 16) to leave the site.

She added: "The council is preparing the next legal step, so that no time is lost should they fail to go.

"This involves booking provisional court time and preparing a section 78 notice, giving the time and date of the court appearance.

"Waste is being collected from the site, and the police continue to review and monitor the situation."

The travellers left the land shortly after 2pm today.
