A man has appeared in court charged with multiple offences in relation to a sexual assault in Bury St Edmunds last year.

Andu Nedelcu, 20, of Călineşti, Arges County, Romania, was arrested by police in his home country on Friday, January 22, after Suffolk detectives secured a European Arrest Warrant, and he was brought back to the UK yesterday.

It follows a sexual assault of a 25-year-old woman in the Shakers Lane area of Bury at about 10.30pm on Monday, May 11. She suffered a wrist injury in the incident.

Nedelcu was brought into custody in Suffolk and appeared before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court this morning, where he was formally charged with attempted rape, sexual assault, causing a female to engage in sexual activity and assault.

He has now been remanded in custody pending his next court appearance at Ipswich Crown Court on March 4.
