An 18-year-old man has appeared in court today in connection with an armed robbery at a shop in Stowmarket.
Police were called at about 8.15am yesterday (Sunday, March 12) to reports that a man entered One Stop, in Ipswich Street, and stole a quantity of cash after showing staff what appeared to be a small axe.
Connor Higgins, of Kent Road, Stowmarket, was detained by officers soon after the incident and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.
He was charged with robbery.
Higgins was also charged with intent to supply a class B drug, namely cannabis, on March 12.
He appeared before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court today (Monday, March 13) and he was remanded in custody to appear at Ipswich Crown Court on April 10.
A second 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.
He has been released on bail pending further enquiries and is due to return to police on Monday, April 24.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.
It’s known there were other people in the shop at the time and officers would like to speak to them or anyone who may have been in the area who may have information that could assist.
The weapon used in the offence has not been recovered and, as the image below shows, it is described as a small wooden handled axe with a distinctive dark painted area at the end of the handle.
While searches have been conducted in the area its location is not known.
If seen the item should not be moved and police should be contacted.
Anyone who can help is asked to contact west Suffolk CID by dialling Suffolk Police on 101, quoting CAD 80 of Sunday 12 March.
