Firefighters are currently tackling a giant fire in a thatched farmhouse in Stonham Aspal.

The blaze at Ubbeston Hall, Stowmarket Road, is thought to have started in the thatched roof and spread through the building. Around 80 per cent of the thatched roof was involved in the fire.

Ten fire engines were called to the listed building at around 1pm, supported by an aerial unit, command support unit and water carrier.

A spokesman for the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said it was a ‘sizeable operation’ and around 70 personnel are currently at the scene. The Salvation Army is also in attendance to provide support.

He added that there was ‘no threat to public safety’.

Salvage of the ground floor and first floor are now complete, but as of 3pm firefighters were still at work on the roof and first floor levels.

Crews are also trying to create a break in the remaining thatch, separating the areas affected from those not to prevent the fire spreading further.
