Udpated: An unexploded bomb has been found at RAF Honington today.

A military spokeswoman said this afternoon the 25lb World War Two practise bomb was found while laying new pipes.

She added: “It will be detonated later today by military specialist bomb disposal officers. There was no local evacuation because it was on the airfield.”

The base, which opened in 1937, was subjected to several Luftwaffe bombing raids during World War Two in which it was used first by RAF Bomber Command and, from June 1942, as an air depot and fighter base by the United States Army Air Force.
