A former UKIP councillor charged with the murder of his wife at their Stowmarket home has claimed he was acting in self defence, a jury has been told.

Stephen Searle, 64, today (Monday) went on trial at Ipswich Crown Court after pleading not guilty to a charge of murder of Jessie Ann Searle on December 30.

At the start of the trial, The Hon Mr Justice Green addressed the jury and said that Searle had claimed that his actions had been in self defence.

The body of Mrs Searle, 62, was found at the couple's home in The Brickfields, Stowmarket.

The trial continues.
