A group of travellers who moved onto a car park in Thetford have been given 24 hours by the town council to leave the area.

The group arrived at a Breckland Council operated car park near Wilkos last night but moved to Barnham Cross Common, run by the town council, at around 11am today.

Accompanied by police, Town Clerk Maurice Howard visited them this lunchtime to hand them a notice to quit, giving the group 24 hours to leave the area.

“It states if they don’t move on then legal action will be taken against them,” he said.

Mr Howard added there were 17 caravans on the common and around twice as many cars.

The travellers have until 2pm tomorrow, Wednesday April 20, to move on.
