Travel card petition falls short of target

A PETITION against the proposed scrapping of a discount travel card for students has narrowly failed to gain enough support.

The Young Person’s eXplore Card was available to 16-19 year olds giving them discounts on bus and rail journeys, but could be ditched as part of cuts by Suffolk County Council.

Some 2,989 people signed a petition to keep the eXplore cards – but Suffolk County Council will not have to consider the petition as it fell 11 names short of a 3,000 name threshold.

Petition organiser Patrick Gillard said the abolition of the card would lead to more cars on the road, making a ‘mockery’ of the council’s ‘greenest county’ aspirations. “It is a retrograde step that threatens the very education and employment opportunities that our young people need in order to help us out of our current economic crisis,” he said.
