CROWDS of people packed Needham Market Community Fire Station on Tuesday for its official opening.

Cllr Eddy Alcock, chairman of Suffolk County Council, officially declared the newly refurbished station open as the alarm sounded and the on-call fire fighters rushed out to tackle a fire.

Mark Hardingham, deputy chief fire officer for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, said: What we have got here is a fantastic on-call fire station that will serve the community here in Needham Market for many years.”

Mick Peck, watch manager at Needham Market fire station since 1990, said: “It’s a nice atmosphere, a lot better for the crews. The facilities are superb.”

The refurbishment of Needham Market Fire Station is part of a county-wide project to replace or refurbish and improve existing fire stations.
