Bury St Edmunds’ Magna Carta 800 celebrations next year will receive £5,000 from the Town Council, it announced today.
The money is to be spent on either educational workshops for children or a permanent commemoration of the event.
The town’s Magna Carta 800 Committee, which has also applied for lottery funding, has a programme of events to be revealed in the New Year.
The Barons are said to have drawn up the charter in Bury in 1214 and it became the template for many legal systems across the world.
The town council’s motto is ‘Sacrarium Regis, Cunabula Legis’ meaning ‘Shrine of the King, Cradle of the Law’, recalling St Edmunds and the charter.
