HOMES and businesses in Stowmarket have got their first taste of super-fast broadband.
More than 8,500 households and firms can now experience high-speed internet connection after telecoms giant BT completed local upgrades on its network.
The move brings the company closer to achieving its aim of providing access to fibre broadband to 185,000 premises in Suffolk by spring 2013.
David Hughes, regional director for East of England, said: “The advent of fibre broadband in Stowmarket is a massive fillip for businesses and housholds.
“It will enrich people’s lives and bring a much-needed boost to businesses in these economically challenging times.
“They’re joining 11 million UK premises which are now passed by one of the world’s fastest growing fibre networks.”
Cllr Timothy Passmore, leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “The latest BT investment is very good news for Stowmarket and indeed Suffolk.
“Super-fast broadband will create new opportunities for everyone in our area, giving our businesses a competitive edge as well as opening new doors for people of every age and background.
“It has the power to transform every aspect of life and the deployment is another step towards having super-fast services available for the whole of Suffolk.”
