Thousands took part in the festive fun at Stowmarket’s big Christmas lights switch-on.

Around 5,000 people braved the cold to celebrate at the town’s marketplace last Friday.

After a performance by the Military Wives, comedian Richard Whymark took to the stage to launch the lights.

The switch-on also marked the start of Stownmarket’s Annual Christmas Tree Festival at St Peter and St Mary’s Church, a Christmas Craft Fayre at the Museum of East Anglian Life and a night of top local music at the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts.

Town clerk David Blackburn said the evening was a great example of Stowmarket’s attractions and organisations working together.

“It was an excellent event and a great night for the town.

“The night itself was a tremendous success as a collaboration between the museum, the parish church, the town council, the town centre partnership and the John Peel Centre.

“But the main thing is that people came along and had a thoroughly good time.”

Town centre manager Sharon Brown said: “There were so many people here last year we didn’t think we could beat it this year – but we did.”
