Thetford club supports chair fund-raiser for Eden

A town football club helped to host an event which raised more than £5,000 towards a new wheelchair for a woman from Thetford.

Thetford Town FC offered the use of its clubhouse for the Saturday Night Party event on November 16, which was raising money for 20-year-old Eden King, who was born with Ulrich Muscular Dystrophy.

Catherine, Eden’s mother, said: “The NHS will provide an electric wheelchair, but Eden needs a specialist chair, that adjusts her height, enabling her to socialise and also supports her breathing system,

“The chair is Eden’s lifeline and safe space. What muscular dystrophy takes from Eden, the chair gives back.”

Eden, who had her first wheelchair at the age of three, uses a ventilator to breathe and had major corrective surgery for scoliosis, which is a sideways curvature of the spine, at the age of nine, which means she has rare shape and posture.

The former Thetford Academy pupil needs a bespoke chair with a specialist control system, so her family are hoping to raise around £26,000 to replace her current wheelchair, which after six years of constant use, keeps breaking down.

Eden, on a gofundme page set up to help hit the target, said: “I really don’t see myself as ‘disabled’. However, when equipment such as my wheelchair fails me it does hit home to me that I am only independent if I’m in my wheelchair and without it I wouldn’t be able to do literally anything.”

The night itself raised £5,250 with more than 100 people enjoying music and participating in an auction.

Catherine said: “I am so grateful to all the wonderful people for attending and to everyone who donated,

“Eden is such a lovely, bright girl and we are so lucky to have the support we do.”

Club chairman Nigel Armes said he was delighted that the event helped to raise so much money.

He said: “The club is part of the community and takes great pleasure in supporting events like this,

“The community supports us, we need to support the community as well.”

The chairman also hopes to arrange a fund-raising match for Eden in 2020, with Thetford Town’s first team hosting another club or a team made up of players from a number of local sides.
