Tayfen Road in Bury St Edmunds closed for urgent gas works

Motorists faced delays in Bury St Edmunds this morning after a stretch of Tayfen Road was closed for urgent gas works.

The road was closed between the Northgate roundabout and Station Hill to enable Cadent to carry out essential repairs to a low pressure gas main.

The road closure is due to be in place until Friday.

A spokesman for Cadent said: "This work needs to be carried out to ensure we maintain safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating to the people in the area.

"To enable us to do the necessary work safely and efficiently a road closure is currently in place.

"We’re doing all we can to complete our work as soon as possible and its currently thought work will need to continue until Friday.

"Cadent is sorry for any inconvenience people may be experiencing as a result of the work."

He added that any suspected gas leaks should be reported on 0800 111 999.

Meanwhile, Barton Hill is still closed – after the road was temporarily re-opened during the Christmas Fayre – with works there not due to be completed until December 21.

As a result of the two closures, drivers using roads on the north side of Bury experienced tailbacks and slow-moving traffic during rush hour.
