Stowmarket firm Muntons to expand with £4.5m investment

One of Stowmarket's largest employers, Muntons, is to expand with a £4.5million investment.

The malt manufacturer is constructing a 27m high building to contain its multi-stage evaporator.

Muntons' chiefs say such improvements will boost production by around 15 per cent by removing production bottle-necks.

Nigel Davies, technical and sustainability director, said: “It seems that people like malt.

"Demand for malted ingredients is at an all-time high – good news for us, but also bringing its problems, as every tonne of malt extract made is sold as fast as it is produced.”

Malt is an ingredient found in beer, whisky and some baked goods.

It has no fat and Mr Davies said its growth in popularity is down to it being used as a healthy alternative ingredient.

"There has been a steady drift towards natural products away from fats and sugar as people embrace a healthier lifestyle," he added. Five vacancies will be advertised.
