A solar farm providing the power needs of about 3,200 homes is to be built near Lackford.

Lackford Estate Solar Park Ltd, of London, has been given permission by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, for the 39 hectare site on agricultural land at Lackford Estate.

The installation would generate 16MW of electricity and would operate for 30 years.

The nearest residential property to the site is 1km away.

Council officers recommended the plans be approved by the development control committee which met yesterday.

They said the matter could have been deferred pending the results of an archaeological investigation.
