A Thetford businessman has hosted a trade fair to help enable smaller businesses to source products directly from overseas suppliers.
Joao de Noronha, director of The Portuguese Offer, said the aim was to give local businesses and consumers an opportunity to sample and buy directly from Portuguese producers so they could compete with the ‘big discounters’ (chain stores).
The event, held at Thetford’s Charles Burrell Centre on Saturday, has been crowned a success and is set to make a return next year in a larger venue so to accommodate even more exhibitors.
Mr Noronha, 64, said he identified a problem with the market through his position as editor of ‘as notícias’ (The News), a newspaper for Portuguese nationals in the UK, and was encouraged to host the fair - the first of its kind in the UK - after holding discussions with the local chamber of commerce.
“We started with Portugal but we’re looking forward to getting Spain involved as well, and we’re now organising something in London and then we will go to Manchester, Bournemouth and other locations in the south east,” he said.
