A Suffolk-wide ‘truancy sweep’ revealed only six unauthorised absences from school.
That compares with a similar sweep last year which revealed 43 truants in Ipswich alone.
The truancy sweep this week took place in Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft and Ipswich. Out of the 30 stopped, 24 of these had permission to be out of school.
County council education welfare officers joined Suffolk Police in patrolling the towns. All parents and carers were stopped and asked for details of the child’s reason for being out of school. Schools were then contacted and where the reason was not valid a fixed penalty was issued.
