A couple who met after two of their relatives married have this week celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Heather and Geoffrey Martin, of Chevington, got to know each other when his brother Hazel got together with her cousin Joan.

Mr Martin, 84, was from Gazeley and Mrs Martin, 80, hailed from Chevington. They married at Chevington Church.

He worked as an agricultural and horticultural engineer and she did office work for an estate agent, the sugar beet factory and the psychiatric department at West Suffolk Hospital.

The pair have two daughters Denise and Glenda, five grandchildren as well as two great grandchildren.

Asked about the secret to a long last marriage, Mrs Martin said: “We’ve shared the same interests - we like historic buildings, nature, walking and we’ve caravanned for more than 40 years.”

To celebrate, they recently enjoyed a cruise of the Rhine and held an open house for friends and neighbours on their anniversary yesterday.

They plan to enjoy a further celebration with their church friends on Sunday and a lunch with family.
