A shadow authority which will help create the new West Suffolk Council is due to meet for the first time next Wednesday.

The meeting will be held subject to an order being signed by the Secretary of State for Local Government.

It is due to appoint a leader, deputy leader and cabinet for the shadow council, which will be composed of the 72 councillors from St Edmundsbury Borough and Forest Heath District councils.

The shadow authority's main purpose is to ensure a smooth transition to the new West Suffolk Council, which replaces both St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath in April 2019.

A spokesman said it will also look at the 'best form' of civic leadership for the new council as well as the 'harmonisation of policies' and setting a budget.

He added: "During this time both Forest Heath District and St Edmundsbury Borough Councils will continue to exist as sovereign bodies and meet as usual.

"All councillors of Forest Heath and St Edmundsbury Councils will serve on the shadow council until the first set of elections to West Suffolk Council in May 2019."
