St Nicholas Hospice Care Paws in the Park poster contest attracts hundreds of entries

Hundreds of cute canines have been striking a picture perfect pose as they vie to become the face of a charity dog show.

Alongside St Nicholas Hospice Care, the Bury Free Press has launched a competition to find a dog to become the face of 2020’s Paws in the Park event, which raises much-needed funds for the charity. Already 320 dogs have thrown their paws into the ring.

Here are just some of the entries we have had during the first week of the competition as we search for a cute canine to star in the event’s posters, banners, programmes and marketing materials.

Jenny Smith, the hospice’s events manager, said: “Every year our poster pooch competition seems to get bigger and better, and this year looks to be no exception. We have been really pleased by the amount of entries we have had already for the competition.

“Paws in the Park will be a great day out for the whole family – human and canine and we are so pleased that already so many dog-lovers and their pets want to be part of it.

“It is clear already that picking our finalists is going to be a very tough job.

“Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to enter their dogs.”

As well as being the face of Paws in the Park 2020, which is sponsored by Countryside, the developers of Marham Park in Bury St Edmunds, the winner’s owner will also win a 10ins by 8ins professional portrait of their dog and a family ticket (two adults and three children) for the event.

The hospice will also be publishing all the images on their Facebook page so you can have a look at the competition – remember to like the pooches you think could be in with a chance of winning, as the judges will consider the popular vote.

All photographs will be judged by a panel to find the 10 cutest canines and then the 10 finalists will be published in the paper for readers to pick a winner.

The closing date is Friday, February 28 at 9am and the winner will be announced in the Bury Free Press on Friday, March 20.

All details requested must be completed otherwise we will be unable to enter your pet into the competition.

Entrants (human and canine) must also be able to attend a Paws in the Park photo-call on Monday, March 16 at the charity’s Bury St Edmunds hospice.

The event will feature a variety of different dog show classes, including best junior handler, dog judges most want to take home and many more.

Last year the occasion, which is organised by the hospice and Swayne and Partners veterinary surgeons, totalled £13,000 for the charity, which supports people across the local area living with death, dying and bereavement.

You can find out more about the event, which is on May 17 at Nowton Park at www.stnicholashospicecare.org.uk/paws-in-the- park
