ANGLIAN Water may use satellite-linked cameras to combat metal theft from its water and sewage plants.
After a three-month trial of Jabbakam’s internet protocol (IP) cameras – sophisticated webcams – in Northamptonshire the company is considering their use elsewhere.
Unlike CCTV, IP cameras do not need a wired link and do not store images, which would be lost if the cameras are vandalised. Instead, they send images to the internet via a satellite link when they are activated by movement sensors.
Lynda Chamberlain, Anglian Water’s security manager, said, “We chose to pilot Jabbakam at remote locations because if it worked there, it would work anywhere.”
