Suffolk’s chief fire officer has urged people to ‘celebrate safely’ ahead of a strike this evening.

Fire crews will be on strike from 6.30 this evening to 12.30 tomorrow morning.

The strike coincides with New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Chief Officer Mark Hardingham said: “New Year’s Eve is a time when the emergency services can sometimes experience an increased level of calls as people indulge in celebrations, drinking and revelry.

“Whilst we are confident that our contingency plans will once again prove effective, we are mindful that this year, we will be experiencing reduced cover during what could be a busy period.

“Please do your bit to help us by looking after friends, family and vulnerable neighbours, staying safe on the roads, reducing fire risks in your home and being safe if setting off fireworks.

“If you do intend going for a night out drinking, please do not use cooking appliances when you return home – get a takeaway instead.”

Tonight is the latest strike action called by the Fire Brigades Union as part of an ongoing pension dispute.
