THE ULTIMATE test of stamina and fitness was undertaken by 200 people last week.
During the Great Barrow Challenge, competitors covered distances of up to 26.2 miles on foot or 120 miles on bike, every day, for four days.
Glen Mould, founder of the Great Barrow Challenge, said: “Anyone can do a marathon, but to wake up the next morning feeling sore and stiff with blisters and then to do it again and again is very difficult.”
Of the 200 people who took part in this year’s event, between September 19-22, only 52 completed the four marathons in four days.
Based upon Nijmegan military training marches, which originated in Holland, the Great Barrow Challenge is the only event of its kind in the UK.
Anyone, of any ability, can test themselves as the challenge offers shorter distances, from six miles by foot and 30 miles by bike.
This year’s event has raised more than £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and children’s charity, Ormiston.
The next Great Barrow Challenge will be a one-day event on December 30. For more information, visit www.greatbarrowchallenge.co.uk
