Organisers of Bury St Edmunds’ EU referendum ‘remain’ campaign say they will no longer be holding an event in the arc shopping centre tomorrow.

Birgitte Mager, co-ordinator of the C-IN Europe Bury constituency, said they would not be taking part out of respect for murdered MP Jo Cox.

Mrs Cox, a Yorkshire mother of two and MP for Batley and Spen, died yesterday after being shot and stabbed in the street on her way to a constituency surgery.

All EU referendum campaigns have been temporarily halted out of respect for the popular MP.

Ms Wagner, who was due to take part in tomorrow’s event in Bury, said: “In light of what’s happened to Jo we’ve cancelled everything. Jo was a very firm supporter of the ‘remain’ campaign and out of respect we’ve said that we’ll all stand united on this one.”

It is not yet known whether ‘leave’ campaigners will host their event tomorrow. If they do, Brexit representatives will be in the arc from 11am-4pm.

The EU referendum will take place on Thursday (June 23).
