A COUNCILLOR is ‘gutted’ after an annual charity event had to be cancelled.

The second Brandon Regatta, due to be held this Sunday, has had to be axed after the Brandon Canoe Club was forced to pull out.

Forest Heath councillor Eddie Stewart, who is also chairman of regatta organisers Little Ouse Group, said the event was the fourth in Brandon to be cancelled this year.

“I am gutted because this is our biggest event of the year and would have raised money for us and Help for Heroes.

“It’s a chance for people to come out and enjoy the beauty of the river and now we’ll have to wait till next year,” he said.

The event was cancelled after Alan Cox, leader of Brandon Canoe Club, informed Mr Stewart that his team members were all suffering with injuries and could not run the event.

Mr Stewart said he expected 12 to 14 teams to be taking part in the day – with more than £500 to be raised as a result.

Teams from Forest Heath District Council, the Ram Hotel and a team of local undertakers were already booked to take part.

Mr Stewart said the event would return next year.
