READERS’ POETRY: From the Bury Free Press of Friday, April 10

Readers' poetry
Readers' poetry

This week we have poems from Jackie Humfrey and Colin Payne.

Mr Imagination called tonight,

and took me by the hand.

Dressed in only the finest,

we dined, it felt so grand.

A parrot sipped a glass of port,

and talked of life abroad.

A little harvest mouse joined in and said:

“Oh god I’m really bored.”

“Fear not” said a passing pussy cat,

“Let me lighten up your day,

and play a game of cards with you,

so you will want to stay.”

“Oh thank you” said the harvest mouse,

“But I really must decline,

cos last time we played a game of cards,

You nicked my glass of wine.”

When I was a boy,

I used to enjoy

Going to our chapel.

Scrubbed and dressed in my Sunday best

With a Kit Kat and an apple.

Hearing tales from the Bible

Filled us all with awe,

We all knew, come next Sunday

We’d be back for more.

Now through older eyes

I’ve come to realise

God’s good teachings filtered through

Seated on that wooden pew.
