RAF Honington to receive the Freedom of the Town from Thetford

RAF Honington will be the first unit granted the Freedom of Thetford in a ceremony, on Sunday, in appreciation of the station's work.

Though the freedom was originally granted by the town and accepted at the Mayor Making ceremony in May, the station will provide a marching contingent to conduct the official freedom parade.

Led by the Band of the RAF Regiment, it will begin at Thetford Grammar School, at 11.50am, and proceed to the market square, where Mayor of Thetford, councillor Brenda Canham, will present the Title Deed to Group Captain Matt Radnall, Station Commander of RAF Honington.

Group Captain Radnall said: “We are delighted and immensely grateful that Thetford has seen fit to honour the serving community at RAF Honington with the Freedom of the Town.

"While many station personnel have participated in some form of freedom parade at some stage in their career, it is very rare to exercise such a privilege for the very first time in any town.It is made all the more significant as the station enjoys such close ties with Thetford, which has become home for many of our former and currently serving members that have chosen to settle there.”

There will be a short reception to follow in the Carnegie Room for parade personnel, VIP’s and civic dignitaries, and an ‘RAF Village’ of supporting stalls and exhibits will be present in the town throughout the day.

The Freedom of the Town is an ancient sign of trust given by the town to nearby military organisations allowing them to march through with drums beating, flags flying and bayonets fixed. It is also an expression of pride for both the town of Thetford and RAF Honington.

More than 130 RAF personnel will form the Parade to include RAF Police, RAF Regiment, and specialists within areas to include Communications, Force Protection, Logistics, and Personnel management.
