Pub landlords are being warned to watch out for a real ale advertising scam.

Suffolk Trading Standards says a West Suffolk pub was tricked in a phone call into taking an advert in a ‘Real Ale Publication’ that did not exist.

Matt Spall, an acting senior trading standards officer, said: “There could be many more who’ve fallen for it but don’t know they’ve fallen for it.

“These sorts of scams have been around for years. Today it’s publicans but tomorrow it could be any other business.

“Be on your guard when people call out of the blue. Don’t say anything too positive and take a name and number, then research it.”

He added that the safest thing, if you feel you need advertising, is to do your research and approach recognised media.
