Professional boxer visits Thurston school

Thurston Community College hosted a visit from Richard Riakporhe, the professional unbeaten cruiserweight boxer and recently crowned WBA Intercontinental Cruiserweight Champion.

Richard gave a special boxing class, signed autographs and hosted a presentation to an auditorium packed full of enthusiastic students.

He also showed students his new belt, which he won on November 11 in an eighth-round victory against Sam Hyde in Manchester on the Tony Bellew vs Oleksandr Usyk undercard.

During his presentation to students, Richard talked about his own route into boxing and how he used negative influences to become an international boxing champion.

His remarkable story included involvement in street crime from the age of 12, being stabbed aged 15 and nearly dying, and spending time in prison.

But he turned his life around, concentrated on his boxing and went to university.
