BUDGET cuts and financial pressures on Mid Suffolk District Council have resulted in its pest control service being outsourced to private company, Mitie.
Residents living in Mid Suffolk will now receive a slightly different pest control service. It will no longer be delivered, as before, by Mid Suffolk District Council (MSDC) itself, after budget cuts found the council exploring ways to continue delivering the service while also meeting financial savings.
The revised service run by Mitie started on Wednesday, with the company taking over all operations from MSDC.
Customers will now receive a new and increased service which will treat a total of 19 pests – an increase from the previous 12 – ranging from insects to rodents.
It also means that customers will be able to book appointments at weekends and on bank holidays in emergency situations.
Mitie will be able to treat pest infestation, as well as offering services in providing a site survey, undertaking insect identification and offering advice about preventing re-infestation and proofing works to properties.
Cllr Marilyn Curran, portfolio holder for environmental health, said: “We have been determined to do all that we can to ensure we continue to provide a high quality service, while meeting the demanding savings we are required to meet.
“The district council can no longer continue to deliver its pest control service in the same way as it has for many years now and we do realise that our customers regard this as an important service.”
To book appointments with the revised pest control service, residents living in Mid Suffolk or in Babergh should call Mitie on 08443 350330.
Mitie’s charges range from £25-£75, though in some cases this covers up to three visits.
The charges remain largely comparable to the previous prices set by MSDC, but the revised service will not continue to offer a 50 per cent discount to those on benefits.
