A £65,000 project to expand a playing field and provide extra car parking in Bardwell is well on its way to completion.
The Bardwell Playing Field Association bought a hectare of land from a local farmer to widen the site which has now been seeded and levelled out.
Meanwhile, the organisation has also leased land from Suffolk County Council to provide an estimated 50 extra parking spaces and is nearly ready for use.
Despite being ‘up against it’ as they didn’t get possession of the land until the end of July, Dave Ray, chairman of the association, said the village’s ‘tremendous’ community spirit has seen the project through.
He said: “We’ve pulled the stops out. The whole project shows what a village community can do.”
They now have to plant 30 trees and 2,500 hedging plants along the boundary of both areas of land.
The playing field will be ready for the village cricket and football clubs to use next year. The project was funded by grants from various organisations as well as the association and cricket club funds.
