A planning application for a new lorry stop by the A14 at Risby will be considered by St Edmundsbury’s Development Control Committee on Thursday.

The 3.5 hectare site near the Calor depot and Class tractors factory on the westbound side was earmarked for lorry stop in the 1998 local plan but removed due to a lack of interest in 2006.

Now George Gittus and Sons is applying for outline permission for a 100-lorry stop with fuel station, shop and driver facilities.

Risby Parish Council has objected over increasing vehicle movements, increased noise and light pollution for residents on the other side of the A14 and the design of a roundabout, which has been revised by the applicant.

Officers recommended approval saying that visual impact is ‘minor’ and the land is of poor agricultural quality because it was a contractors’ depot in the 1970s while a bridge was being built.

They suggest it would be popular with drivers because it would mean they no longer had to cross the A14 to get to existing facilities on the eastbound side.
