Royalty lifted spirits on a rather damp and dismal opening day of the Royal Norfolk Show today.

A sunny Wednesday morning turned into a wet afternoon but the arrival of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall for a three-hour tour of the showground cheered up exhibitors and visitors.

And gardening royalty was there too, with TV Gardeners’ World presenter, Monty Don, championing the cause of locally grown produce and food.

Prince Charles met children at the Discovery Zone and visited the Rare Breeds Survival Trust while Camilla called at the flower and garden show and the military area to meet D-Day veterans and congratulate RAF Marham on its centenary year display.

The couple met up in the food hall and, sheltered by umbrellas, talked to exhibitors in the livestock rings.

Monty Don got a taste of Norfolk’s best produce courtesy of the county’s celebrity chefs in the cookery theatre and held his own gardening question time session.

Attractions in the main ring include motorcycle stunt displays, military bands horse-drawn vintage machinery, foxhounds and show jumping. There are also hundreds of trade stands and visitors could watch everything rural from farriery competitions to fly fishing.

The show continues tomorrow when, with drier weather forecast, the programme includes the presentation of long service awards to farm workers.
