Guide Dogs for the Blind fund raiser Bryan Garnham had a shock when he asked Phyllis Pettitt how much her coffee morning had raised.

The veteran fund raiser for the charity in Bury St Edmunds said: “Normally at a coffee morning you get £50 or £60, but when she said £730 and still counting — well, it’s incredible really.”

When Phyllis, of Hardwick Lane, Bury, finally stopped counting days later, the total was £815, including £40 raised by friend Pat Pierce with coffee morning.

Phtllis, 74, started the annual coffee mornings after her husband Les died six years ago, with one for St Nicholas Hospice care.

Since then she has dedicated them to a variety of charities.

Phyllis said a couple of car boot sales fund the supplies.

“Then things just come in,” she said. “I had 32 bottles of all sorts. We have a tombola.

“There were 75 people here. I would’ve been disappointed if we had raised under £700.”

nA Guide Dog collection day around Bury St Edmunds on July 13 raised £1,500.
