Bury St Edmunds specialist snowboard and ski shop hosts Paralympian Owen Pick
Paralympian snowboarder Owen Pick will be guest of honour tonight at an event at specialist snowboard and ski shop Odyssey in St John’s Street, Bury St Edmunds.
This is Odyssey’s 10th ‘snow’ evening where people are invited to browse the new winter season’s stock and enjoy discounts and some social interaction with fellow snowboard and ski enthusiasts.
It will also be an evening with a touch of poignancy as a Capita Springbreak ‘Slush Slasher’ snowboard will be raffled in memory of late airman Michael Mahony who died in a motor bike accident at Christmas.
Michael, 22, from RAF Lakenheath served with The Green Dragons - the 48th Maintenance Group, 48th Component Maintenance Squadron.
His family and friends have set up the MKM Kindness Project on Facebook in his memory where people can share acts of kindness.
Chris Woollam, who with his wife Caroline have run Odyssey since 2006, said: “Michael’s mum donated the board as she wanted to share his passion and his love of snowboarding. Michael won our top raffle prize last year and coming from Texas had just discovered snowboarding.”
He added: “We are thrilled to have Owen coming along. He’s been in a few times and is a lovely down to earth guy who is passionate about his snowboarding.”
The silver medal winner at this year’s World Para Snowboard Championships, who lives in Red Lodge, said: “It’s great to have Odyssey for someone like me. If I need anything I can just pop down the road. They keep all the good brands so it’s just awesome.”
Owen is off to the Switzerland training camp ahead of this year’s season before travelling to Holland for the World Cup bank slalom championships.
The evening begins at 6pm and will also be attended by a rep from Burton Snowboards.
