So county council leader Mark Bee has agreed to look again at the issue of traffic in St Andrew’s Street South, in Bury St Edmunds.
That’s a positive move and well done to Paul Hopfensperger for bringing the matter to his attention.
If only Cllr Bee had asked the people of Bury earlier, though, the problem could have been sorted years ago.
Every time I walk into town from the Bury Free Press offices, I take my life in my hands crossing that road. If it’s not a bus or taxi, it’s a cyclist or a private car (which shouldn’t be there at all) just rumbling past and threatening to nudge me towards an early grave.
Call me old-fashioned but I like a pavement and a road. I know where I should be on foot and the road-user knows where his or her space is. Blur that line with ‘shared space’ and you have a recipe for disaster.
I hope Cllr Bee’s words weren’t empty and that something can be done swiftly to iron out the road’s problems.
