SOCIAL MEDIA: Why using Google+ is good for your business

Google is the biggest search engine in the world and Google+ (pronounced and sometimes written as Google Plus) is the social network created by Google.

This is why, despite the recent changes and rumours of its demise, I believe you need to make sure you have a presence on this social media platform if you want your business to be found more easily.

Whatever Google product you touch: YouTube, Gmail, Drive, etc, your social fingerprint is filed and matched to your online persona. Google knows who you are, who your friends are and where to find you.

Google+ is not just another social media platform, Google has described it as a ‘social layer’ that enhances many of its online properties. Google+ also boasts features and other advantages that other social platforms lack (or that it does better).


There is no denying that Facebook is still the undisputed leader of social networks – but Google+ is working hard to gain ground and for business, there is strong evidence it actually exceeds Facebook’s performance in terms of engagement according to a survey in the U.S. by Forrester Research in the first quarter of 2014.

You do need to weed out the inflated figures from Google as it does have a much smaller audience than Facebook. It is well optimised for business uses – especially branding – adding or refining features specifically targeted for business.

Google+ is a content – and media-rich visual platform to draw in those with special interests and align them with yours as a business. Maximising your business brand on Google+ involves staying focused on your target audience, business goals and niche while engaging with others. To use Google+ for your business it’s important to follow some best practices.

To get going just start by doing the following

Create your Google+ Page. Don’t forget to follow all the steps including verifying your page per Google’s instructions.

Claim your custom URL. Having a custom URL will make it easier to share your information and look nicer too.

Add a G+ Badge to Your website. You can create one easily after you’ve completed your profile and it will enable people to follow you on G+.

Build Your Followers. Google+ is set up to help you get more followers, just use their search function.

Follow Strategically. Follow movers and shakers within your industry. Follow people who look like they might be your target audience and those you are already connected to on other social media.

Interact with Others. Finally, don’t forget that like most social media, building your brand is about connecting and interacting with others.
