I’d barely finished writing last week’s tribute piece to the late Mike Ames when news broke this week of the death of Sir Eldon Griffiths.

The former Bury St Edmunds MP was a stellar figure in politics nationally and a renowned local politician. Anyone who can keep the canny Suffolk electorate happy for nigh on three decades has something special about them.

I’m afraid I can’t speak of Sir Eldon from personal experience – I never had the pleasure to meet him – but I would have loved to have sought his opinion on the current crop of UK MPs. What did he make of their slip-ups?

As for a tribute, any words seem rather puny compared to the life Sir Eldon enjoyed. He was a Cambridge and Yale scholar and a former managing editor at Newsweek magazine. It’s the stuff of dreams for many of us.

We have been blessed with some great constituency MPs in Suffolk – the tributes this week for Sir Eldon show him to be one of the most respected we have seen.
