Ivy Coleman’s story is one which will strike a chord with all of us.

After all the sell-offs of residential care homes for the elderly, Ivy is the end-user in today’s care equation. And she has now had to move from the village where she has lived for the past 60 years.

The decision to close the Lakenheath Village Home was taken ‘reluctantly’. We can understand that. These are tough times for every single business and no blame is intended to be aimed at them directly.

But big decision makers need to be aware that the consequences of their actions go far beyond any political points scoring or money-balancing spreadsheets.

Whether it’s the school reorganisation issue or, as in this case, old people’s care, the lives of real people are the most important consideration with every decision. The consequences of failing to recognise this, go to the very heart of what we all hold dear to us.
