The public have until next Wednesday to have their say on the future of Bury St Edmunds Crown Post Office’s proposed move to WH Smith.

Roger Gale, Post Office Crown Network general manager, said: “We are committed to keeping our services in the high street, which we know is hugely important to people. This proposal means we can do that into the future.”

The Post Office says the move to Smiths will allow Sunday opening.

However, following a meeting at the Post Office last week, Bury’s Conservative MP Jo Churchill, the ward’s Tory councillor Andrew Speed and David Cull of the Communications Workers’ Union all accused the Post Office of already having made up its mind and only ‘paying lip service’ to public consultation.

Mr Cull also criticised the Post Office for failing to tell the local press about a ‘customer forum’ about the move held at St John’s Centre last Wednesday evening.
