Old library set to re-open

ONE of Stowmarket’s best- known buildings is set for its official renaming and relaunch.

The former Old library, which served the town from the 1940s to the 1980s, is being renamed The Redwood Community Rooms after it was extended and refurbished.

Building work at the site, at Red Gables in Ipswich Street, was made possible with funding from the National Lottery, Mid-Suffolk District Council and Suffolk County Council, with a total cost of £140,000.

On Wednesday, Sheila Ravenscroft will unveil a special memorial plaque at the building’s reopening celebration, a ‘vintage’ tea party to mark the building’s 70 years in the town.

Sheila’s late husband, the broadcaster John Peel, officially opened the Red Gables building in 1997.

The refurbished rooms feature two large meeting rooms and a modern kitchen facilty for use by all areas of the community, from private hire to voluntary organisations.
