A privately-owned bus company is planning to open a depot in Bury St Edmunds.

Stephensons of Essex operates a fleet of almost 90 buses and coaches throughout West Suffolk, mid Essex and the south, with Haverhill used as its main Suffolk base.

But - in a move that is expected to create up to 10 local jobs - the firm is trying to secure a base in Bury to allow it to run some of its operations more locally from the town.

Managing director Bill Hiron confirmed Stephensons would be opening a ‘small’ base in Bury, but did not want to comment on the exact location as negotiations are still in progress.

He said: “The final bits of the deal are still being negotiated, and we‘re awaiting permission from the Traffic Commissioner (the bus industry regulator) to operate from the site.”

He added: “Haverhill has become quite full as we’ve expanded. We’ll still be retaining it as the main Suffolk base, and will carry out all maintenance there.”
