Fire crews have been tackling a barn fire in Stowmarket overnight.

Fire engines from Stowmarket and Elmswell were called to the blaze at a barn in Newton Road, Stowmarket shortly after 9pm.

They found a dutch barn containing 40 tonnes of loose straw alight and, because of the close proximity to a second barn, established a fire break.

The straw is being allowed to burn while crews protect the surrounding area by damping down with hose reels.

At 1am today a pump from Needham Market was sent to relieve Elmswell’s pump.

A relief crew from Hadleigh attended at 5am and further relief from Ipswich was sent after 9.40am.
