Supermarket giant Morrisons has confirmed it is no longer interested in opening a store on a £5 million retail park in Thetford.

Breckland Council granted planning permission to the Crown Estate and Pigeon Investments to build a superstore in Mundford Road, as part of the Thetford Enterprise Park, in February last year.

The approval of the site, earmarked for Morrisons, prompted the refusal of a rival bid for Asda to build a store in London Road.

However, Morrisons yesterday confirmed it was no longer considering the site.

A spokewoman for the Crown Estate said: “The Crown Estate, alongside Pigeon, secured planning consent in 2013 for a food store within the proposed Thetford Enterprise Park.

“Since then, we have been in discussion with a number of food retailers to potentially take the site forward, but so far these have not reached a conclusion.”

Mayor of Thetford Sylvia Armes expressed disappointment that Morrisons had lost interest in the ‘prime location’, and called on Breckland Council to ensure the site was not abandoned.
