GRANTING WISHES: Paramedic Hannah Schumann's ball will raise funds to help grant wishes to the terminally ill

A Mildenhall paramedic has organised a charity ball to raise funds for a charity that helps grant wishes to terminally ill patients.

Hannah Schumann’s The Wish Ball will start at 6.30pm on Friday (March 25) at The Brook, in Soham.

It will raise money for The Ambulance Wish Foundation, which Hannah found out about at a meeting in Bury St Edmunds last year.

It is based on a Dutch charity established in 2007 by ambulance driver Kees Veldboer, who visited Bury last November to meet would-be UK volunteers.

He came up with the idea after an ambulance delay led him to ask cancer patient Mario Steffanutto what he would like to do whilst waiting. Mr Stefanutto, a former sailor, asked to be taken to the Vlaardingen canal so he could say one last goodbye to the sea.

The charity has now expanded to the UK and relies on volunteer paramedics, nurses and doctors to take the patients, who are usually on many medications, to make their last days special.

Hannah, 27, who volunteers for the charity, said: “As it stands the charity provides ambulances from Rotterdam to fulfil wishes of the British people, which is very costly. So we are hoping to raise money for an ambulance to be kept in the UK.”

Tickets to the black tie charity ball cost £35 per person which includes a three-course meal and a welcome drink.

Tables of eight or more also get a free bottle of Prosecco.

Anyone interested in attending is asked to call Hannah on 07710 490328 or 07506 060224.
