A lunch club which is a ‘life line’ for isolated people enjoyed a festive show after scooping a £1,000 grant.

Members of the Lunch Bunch, were treated to Tickled Pink Productions’ ‘Winter Wonderland’ at their base in St John’s Church, Mildenhall.

It follows a £1,000 grant from Cllr James Waters, leader of Forest Heath District Council, from his locality budget , which has paid for four lots of entertainment with enough left to go towards a coach trip.

The club meets every Tuesday from 10.30am until 2.30pm and has about 25 members.

Shirley Hunter, co-ordinator of the club, said: “The lowest age range is a lady in her 50s and we’ve got people in their 90s. It offers friendship, company and we’re like a big family.

“It’s a life line to a lot of people - we have a volunteer chef and we play games. It just gives people who are normally isolated a chance to meet others, chat and generally socialise.”

“We provide transport to those who need it.”

With years of experience, Mrs Hunter and the club’s volunteers are able to offer advice on issues such as housing and benefits.

She said: “If I can’t help them we will find someone who can. We do liaise with other agencies.

“The jewel in the crown of this club is the volunteers - the place wouldn’t run without dedicated volunteers.”

On the Winter Wonderland show, Mrs Hunter added: “People really enjoyed it and lapped it up - they’re coming back in January to do the pantomime Beauty and the Beast.”

New members to the club are welcome and can drop in on a Tuesday from 10.30am.
