Mike no friend to Elmswell road closure plans

An Elmswell parish councillor has branded plans to close an important road in the village for 14 weeks as ‘ludicrous’.

Mike Friend, of Mill Gardens, feels the closing of Wetherden Road from February 4 until May 12, shows a lack of care to the village and the surrounding areas.

He said: “School, college and public buses use it. It is a very busy road to get to the likes of Norton, Woolpit, Wetherden and Haughley Green. This will affect thousands of people. It is completely ludicrous.

“There is no viable alternative route from Wetherden to Elmswell without backtracking to the A14 or using a single track lane unsuitable for good vehicles.”

The closure is to allow construction vehicles access to sites north and south of the road for the Crest Nicholson housing development, which will have 240 new homes.

The councillor said the parish council was only told of the lengthy closure two days before the road signs went up.

He said: “The signs say 14 weeks, but we all know it will be more like 20. I don’t know if there is a better alternative – could the road could be closed off for a section of time each day? We have already been told that night work was not an option, but there must be another way to do this.”

Suffolk Highways said the closure is required for necessary utility works relating to the development.

A spokesman said: “We appreciate concerns raised over the duration of the road closure, however Suffolk Highways has insisted collaborative working within the road closure by all utilities, thus minimising disruption and reducing the time needed on the highway.

“We will be monitoring progress throughout the period of the closure to ensure work is happening as efficiently as possible.”
