Kentwell historical re-enactor enjoys success with micro-brewery's pagan themed beers

A man who plays Luke Forrester, the Tudor brewer at Kentwell’s historical re enactment days, is also brewing and selling his own distinctive beers which reflect periods in the pagan calendar.

Paul Canham launched his Weird Sisters micro brewery at the end of 2018 and supplies beers to Beautiful Beers, in St John’s Street, Bury St Edmunds.

His distinctive labels are based on a photograph he took of his daughters Rachel, Katie and Jasmine, who are also keen re-enactors at Kentwell. The name Weird Sisters he took from the Wyrd Sisters in the Terry Pratchett books.

Each beer has an explanation of the festival that it reflects.

Pagan Paul, 61, spent 30 years working at RAF Lakenheath and MoD Police at Wethersfield until he took early retirement to study sociology and psychology.

He believes Weird Sisters might be the smallest registered brewery in the country in terms of size and output – about 80 pints a month.

Fire in the Belly is a smoked red lager, while Dark Morris Old Ale is a wintry brew with oak chips and brandy flavouring. Hearth Fire is an oatmeal stout with hedgerow blackberries.

Paul and daughter Jasmine are also members of the Green Dragon Morris and he sells his beers at fairs and festivals.

He said: “My primary objective is to make the very best beer that I can, using the very best ingredients regardless of cost.

“This is very much a hobby but by keeping production levels low I can ensure demand is high and can charge enough to cover my costs and make a bit of profit to reinvest.”
